Welcome to the Directory
For the past 37 years the Child Care Information Centre has gathered and disseminated information about services for children with special needs, so that those working with them can provide appropriate and realistic services.
We have always believed that information is a powerful tool that should be shared as widely as possible, and that parents and caregivers are invaluable and indispensable partners in the management of children with special needs.
Over the years the Directory has recorded a steady increase in the number of services and self help groups and has at the same time provided evidence of many gaps in the services, particularly for children in the rural areas.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Directory, both by acquiring and providing information. We would like to keep this important publication up to date and hope that users will inform the Child Care Information Centre of inaccuracies and omissions.
Special thanks to Val Hoy, Shala Chetty and Caroline Taylor of Inclusive Education Western Cape for the many hours they have spent compiling and editing the new edition of the Directory. Their valuable contribution was made on an entirely voluntary basis. Thanks must also go to the DG Murray trust whose financial support has enabled this project.
With this edition, we are also adding an exciting new online version of the Directory. This will allow wider accessibility of the information for all involved in the care of children with special needs.
We trust that this publication meets the service needs of our users so that together we can strive for better care for children.
